The 22nd Annual Western Montana Karate Classic
Since it’s beginning as a local tournament, the Western Montana Karate Classic has grown into a nationally sanctioned event. The tournament annually draws 250 to 300 competitors from all over the West and Canada and between 700 to 1,000 spectators. With 120 divisions and up to nine competition rings, the event has been covered by such top martial art magazines such as Sport Karate International, Complete Illustrated, and Action Martial Arts.
This tournament is considered and “open” event, allowing spectators to enjoy a variety of martial styles.
The tournament was founded by Chris and Pattie Crews, owners and instructors at American Kenpo Karate. With over 60 years of martial arts experience between them, they are both respected and accomplished competitors, as well as award-winning event judges. They hold belts in many styles, including Japanese Shotokan, Okinowin Shorin Ryu, and Ed Parker’s American Kenpo Karate.
We also work to keep our tournament on time and well-organized. Of the nineteen years we have hosted this tournament, it has been completed by 5:00 pm 16 times. The other times that it has run longer, we have finished the event no later than 7:00 pm. We credit this to the help of the many individuals who freely give their time and expertise to make sure that the tournament runs smoothly.
